Todays first lesson for this new unit involved mike going over the accessible criteria and going over the important deadlines that we need to adhere to if we want our animation screened at the degree show.
This is the accessible criteria
We were asked also to do an individual contract so that we all agree to do certain things in regards to our project and using it as a good scheduling tool. This is my individual contract for my personal project "I wanna be ... A Dinosaur i shall be directing this film and animating it all myself. This is obviously a work in progress as things can clearly change over a few months. I am very big on scheduling and also deadlines i feel they are a major way of building team morale as there is no confusion.
On my other Project The monty python project i am working just as an animator and at this point don't know when i will have the character to animate so their is difficulty setting deadlines anne outlining a plan.
However for my third project which i was doing both Concept art and animation is the smoking elephant project i have since stopped work on the animation as the level of disorganisation of the project led me to believe i could not work to a good standard. However i am still continuing concept art but it is entering its last stages of concept art and i have done a short plan.
Also we had to do a Group Contract this is done by the director of each project so as i am directing my own here is the contract for " I wanna Be... A Dinosaur."
We have been told that using google calendars scheduling is made easy and we have been advised to create a google calendar for ourselves for groups.
I already had this google calendars and as i said before i am very big on deadlines and schedules so i have filled my calendar full of what i need to do on what day and when i need things completed by if i follow this schedule i should complete all the work.
Busy i know but i feel scheduling properly puts you ahead in the production process and helps you if their are issues throughout the project.
in Our lesson today we were introduced to dropbox so as director of my own project i opened an account and made folders for each of the production stages.
I found this is a very easy way for the whole team to have access to the files at one time and is quick and easy to use.
Todays lesson was a lesson where we were instructed about what requirements we need to adhere by to have our film screened for hundreds of people at the degree show.
There are a few strict rules when it comes to flashing images but we have the opportunity to use a device that picks up whether its to much flashing so should be quick to tone down if needed. The requirements were.
- 1920 x 1080 pixels at 25 FPS
- Interlaced = when each line is split (i.e. 1080i)
- Timecode: EBU Colour Bars and Tone at 09:57:00:00, Clock at 09:59:20:00, programme starts at 10:00:00:00
- Name of programme, description of first shot and director placed on clock.
- Audio: PPM is zero level, each division is 4db. It is better to be on the quieter side, but important not to go too far over as it will start distorting
- EPILEPSY: The programme itself must be produced in a way that it should not trigger epileptic seizures, no flashing images
We recorded the voiceover a couple of days ago (16th February) and after the recording i sat with my sound designer richard Gallagher and we chose from the recording which versions of each paragraph we would use so i chose which ones and he went and edited them. he was finished a couple of days later and he sent me these files over drop box into the sound folder. The voiceover sounds great and its going be work fantastic with sound and all.
Also i have a music guy working on the project Ben Brannan and i asked him to do a score for a piece of a quick animatic which i did and also a title sequence for if it was to ever be made into a series which i want it to. he uploaded the music into the music folder on the i wanna be dropbox account.
My chosen two shots for hand i have chosen shot 002 and shot 003
shot 03
TARGET AUDIENCE
My target audience is from the ages of 5 to 9 year old boys i would say but a lot of the humour parents and older viewers will find funny.
I would put it in the same catorgorie as Disney's "Phineas and ferb"
It is clearly aimed at this age range but the humour is sophisticated enough to entertain the older viewer and is one of my favourite cartoons to watch it is a real throw back to the cartoons of yesteryear. This is also from my findings the most popular cartoon for kids to watch at the moment.
the channels who i hope to pitch this idea to is
I wrote this as the idea as a series and over time i thought i had the possibility to use as a pilot but so it works as a short film on its own to so i re wrote certain things that made it more appealing as a single short film but not so it ruins the pilot i feel as i have don't this very well and it means i can promote it as a short film and increase the chances of it being commissioned.
A large part of this unit is to promote our perspective films so i have been looking into how feature films and indeed short films are marketed and promoted.
Here you can see the poster for one of my favourite short films "one man band"
You can see that its very minimalist a striking image and the title at the top character in the centre with small bits of information on the bottom. But pretty much its just a striking image and title.
Here is another pixar short film poster again the title in the top section of the image but this time there is a small humorous tagline underneath the title always a good way of attracting the audience and leave them wanting more.
Now looking at feature films this poster is frankenweenie
This takes a different approach by sectioning the title at the bottom section of poster but one thing that has stayed the same of all these three posters is the main focal point is in the centre of the poster because that is where the audience looks first.
Another thing i like about this poster is because it is a feature film it obviously has a release date and even short films don't normally have that i think having a date of the degree show will hopefully make people want to come to the degree show to get an exclusive look at the film.
My idea for my poster was to signify that billy wants to be a dinosaur but not giving to much of the film away because part of the enjoyment of the film is seeing billy as a dinosaur i did not want to ruin that when the viewers see the film for the first time.
i started with the poster colour scheme and went with green because i signify dinosaurs with the colour green as a lot of them were green.
I really love this poster it captures the feel of the animation without giving too much away i have also put the blog address at the bottom for anyone who wishes to follow project. Also in the example posters i showed the main focal point was in the centre i have tried to get the dinosaur shadow as central as possible because that is what billy sees himself as .
I will try a similar design to this but add a few different things like the date of release
Also on this one there is the website domain name which i have just purchased and will be starting the website making soon.
I wanted to elaborate on billy the main character and hopefully people will love billy he is so cute so i made a poster with him dominating the poster but still a similar theme to the other posters.
I remember these posters of the minions from despicable me were some of my favourites so simple
here is mine
Ok so now i have posters done its to the website so i opened up wix and came to the assumption that wix is great but every website will be the same if i don,t start from scratch so thats what i did using wix.com editor i created background in photoshop and imported them into wix and used each element and layered them up so it had the feel of my film.
And a desktop wallpaper for download on website.
this is the background based upon the posters of course having a consistent theme is always a good thing.
This is the background
i took a example of how the new pixar film brave website has been done its very simple
the website opens up with a trailer for the film and gives a chance for visitors to like the film on face book.
this is my version complete with this promo of myself introducing the film to the world.
and this is it on my site.
As you can see there is an opportunity for the viewer to like on Facebook and this is my Facebook page they can like.
Then we have a page where the viewer can get to know Billy by giving them a brief description
Also you may notice there is 2 option for social networking twitter and Facebook i feel twitter is an easy and effective way of promoting and communicating so i have set up a twitter account just for the film where people will have updates and progress of the film.
the next page is about which gives a brief description of what the film is about
Then there is a gallery full of images of concept work and images from final shots.
then a videos page
i will be uploading trailer viral videos like my promo and a making of documentary near completion of the film.
then finally i feel a great way to advertise is posters wallpapers getting people to put your image on there screens because they like someone else sees it and it spreads. so the final page is a downloads page where people can download posters and wallpapers for use on iphone, ipad and laptops.
I feel the website works great and looks great and most of all is advertises the film well but with the character of the film.
Invites for degree show
I have thought about who i want to invite to the degree show out of many people i thought as i am working on what will be a pilot for a series commissioned i would invite the cbbc and cbeebies.
So i spoke to them when they came in to give a talk to animation students and got there emails so that i could pitch my idea to them in a couple of months time.
Sarah Muller- Sarah.muller@bbc.co.uk
Cbeebies-Jackie.edwards@bbc.co.uk
General- Tamara.how@bbc.co.uk
i will email them and ask if they would like to attend the degree how and see what i will eventually be pitching.
Marketing Myself.
I major thing about the end of year degree show promoting ourselves as we hope to get a job from the showing are work we have done at the degree show.
I have wrote a list of things i think you may need to get noticed
A brand
Business Cards
Showreel
Image of work
Website
First i will talk about a website i have had a website for sometime now which i designed myself around my brand that i have created.
my website at http://www.garyralphsanimations.com/
this is the homepage
All of my brand is blue and as you can see i have accounts and access to all of the major social networking sites and video uploading sites.
About
This page is about me and my skills and what i want to achieve
Then there is a gallery of my work so far
And of course a page where all my contact information is kept i set up this new site about 3 months ago and have had over 1000 unique visitors and i have already had calls from directors and filmmakers asking if we could discuss maybe doing a project together.
I have now put my brand onto business cards ready for the degree show
this is a great way of getting your information to them quickly without necessarily having to meet them and its sticks with them in there wallet.
SHOWREEL
I will be completing a showreel for the end of year show which will include my work i am doing now so that will be done in a couple of months time.
Conclusion
This unit is a unit i feel i have done very well at because it catered for alot of my skills which includes scheduling, coming up with a brand and advertising.
The unit has made it easier to prepare for the things that need to be done that we as animators don't normally think about when we are slaving away at computers or drawing boards.
I feel this unit as made me go into more detail the areas that i feel i excel and made me reseach my target market in depth to try and cater for that audience.
Overall this unit was fantastic and think this unit is great to have at this time of year as it makes us concentrate on the things that need to be done other than the final film.
